Launched in January 2011 to a limited number of centres across EMEA, with full launch planned for Q2 2011, AFFIXUS™, is the latest addition to the Trauma and Extremities portfolio.
A worthy companion to the VERSANAIL® IM Nail Platform and a key component of DePuy’s comprehensive Hip Fracture portfolio, AFFIXUS™ was designed to improve the surgical experience and overcome some of the challenges presented by existing proximal femoral nails.
Combining the principles of a compression hip screw with the biomechanical advantages of an intramedullary nail, AFFIXUS™ is designed to treat a wide range of proximal femoral fracture indications.
Manufactured from TiMAX™ anodized titanium alloy for high fatigue strength and optimal stress transfer, the nail can be used in conjunction with a single lag screw and an optional anti-rotation (AR) screw to maintain re-alignment of unstable fractures.
The double screw design provides improved resistance to cut-out and increased rotational stability over single lag screw systems, additionally, the pre-loaded set screw provides the option of locking the proximal screw(s). An extensive range of neck/shaft angles, distal diameters and nail lengths, combined with a small proximal nail diameter, allows the surgeon to achieve a close match for each patient's anatomy. Furthermore, the unique distal bend on the long nails reduces the potential for anterior cortex penetration.
The instruments are colour-coded and laid out for easy identification and correct selection. The radiolucent insertion and targeting jig allows good fluoroscopic visualisation of the nail and anatomy for proximal lag screw, anti-rotation screw and distal static and dynamic screw targeting. Goal Post™ technology facilitates visualisation of the femoral neck on the lateral view in order to more accurately place the guide pin for the lag screw. AFFIXUS™ is the evolution of clinically tested and proven competitor proximal femoral nail systems.
